We had a great time at the 2012 Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival, where our film screened on Saturday, April 21st, to an enthusiastic audience. We got lots of laughs and we generated some serious discussion of the issues dealt with in Camp Kickitoo. All in all, it was most gratifying.
We screened Camp Kickitoo for an appreciative audience at the 2012 Green Bay Film Festival, which was held March 23rd-25th. Annie and Ric attended. Below is a slideshow of some photos from the festival.
Camp Kickitoo screened at the 2012 San Diego Black Film Festival on January 28, 2012. We are happy to announce that the Jury selected our film for the festival's "Best Comedy" award.
'Camp Kickitoo,' a fast-paced hip-hop comedy, centers on the unlikely romance between Alvin, an unemployed banker, and Wanda B, a beautiful hip-hop singer. Recent MBA graduate and pretty-good drummer, Alvin accepts a summer job at Camp Kickitoo, which turns out to be not your usual summer camp, but a rehab facility for minor drug offenders, introducing a mixed bag of colorful characters. Initially assigned to the kitchen as a pot washer, Alvin becomes a camp counselor in charge of Wanda, an angry camper unjustly busted for marijuana possession. United by music, stormy relationship evolves into steamy love affair.
This 96 minute feature is the first directing effort for two old industry pros, Ric Sternberg and Mike Sullivan. Ric wrote the first draft of the screenplay 21 years ago, based roughly on a couple of situations he encountered early in life. The film was produced on a shoestring budget but, by enlisting the services of a few industry and artist friends and calling in some favors, they managed to pull together an extremely talented cast and crew who brought a look and quality to the film far beyond that budget.
